Mexico Killed in Drug Deal →
via @flambedude: morbid, but hilarious and very apt.
19 September 2010.
I leave the country in three days for an undetermined amount of time. I’m working in France as a teacher until April, and then doing the same in Laos, with Maggie, for at least a year, but likely longer. This is the landmark I was holding my breath for in those last horrible days before Maggie left. I know being abroad and having my own adventures will make the fact that I’m not taking...
When Your Infant is Secretly Famous In Japan... →
Insane stories like these are beautiful in their own right, I think.

Marketing Miracle
Lauren: If you were hosting a conference at a casino, and you had a scavenger hunt-esque paper where the people at your conference had to go around and get their paper stamped by various vendors, what would you call it?
Me: Lucky something?
Lauren: Yeah. Or "ante up?" Or, "deal yourself a lucky hand"?
Me: Or, "Cash Out"
Lauren: Hmm
Me: I know! "Cash out your lucky ante up... scavenger hunt"
Lauren: I like it.
An Arranged Marriage →
from the New Yorker’s 20 under 40 series. I like the way she explores the ideas surrounding arranging a marriage in the 21st century; more about money, less about religion, more about the democracy of the internet, less about the tyranny of one’s parents… but still, unwaveringly, arranged.

Ok, I'll watch Modern Family
Mitchell: I don't want to just sit around and [woman starts massaging his feet]... sweet lady Gaga that is good. [pause, sips a drink] Mmm what's this called?
Cam: Happiness.

Human-Flesh Search Engines →
An interesting discussion of the human-flesh search engine phenomenon in China and, beyond that, the differences between the intersection of internet and government in China and the US.
29 August 2010.
I posted the great interaction I had this past week with a stylist who, with a few choice words, completely eased my tension about making the full implications of my use of the word “girlfriend” clear. That’s the thing about the English language as it applies to women: heterosexual women can refer to their platonic female friends as “girlfriend” without anybody...

Studies funded by the government about Cannabis and its inconveniently positive aspects.

An Open Mind
Stylist: You never know, maybe you'll meet the Person of your dreams.
Me: I've already met her. She lives in Laos.
Pleonastic Doubling →
I love word games. And the absurdity of the English language. Beautiful.
22 August 2010
I’ve been terrible at writing text posts and there are all sorts of excuses. Last weekend, for example, I had my wisdom teeth out - other weekends have been taken over by friends or family. All together, this weekend-disappearance makes for the strange predicament in which I find myself: 2 weeks left in Detroit and 4 weeks left in the U.S.
This weekend has been spent thinking seriously...
Black Gay Culture in Detroit →
I love the idea of the gay community in Detroit. In so many ways, this town is on the brink of being reset. So why not be open and welcoming to everybody who wants to help out? My favorite quotation: “We all love Detroit,” he says. “We want to see Detroit improve, side by side, on the bus, in the boardroom, in the church pews. This is the 21st century and a city that should...

Drowning Creature
A: You're strange.
Me: Yes. I'm a strange creature.
A: What kind of creature?
Me: The Creature of the Black Lagoooooon
A: How can you live in a lagoon if you can't swim?

Care of Mr. Fry, this is ballsy and hilarious. Beautifully executed.

You'll Put Your Eye Out, Kid
S: Did you... do you know that there are some kids that are... Blind?
Me: Yeah, I did...
S: And you know how they got like that?
Me: How?
S: They looked at the sun too long and [gesturing] their eyes got smaller and smaller and smaller until they disappeared and they were blind.
Me: Wow! That's intense.
S: You know what else?
Me: What.
S: If you wanna cheat to wrestle, all you gotta do is pick up a little piece of something small like this [picks up a piece of paper] and make it real small and throw it in the bad guy's eyes. Then you kick him and run away.
Me: Good to know. I'll try to remember that next time there's a bad guy around.
The Dredgeman's Revelation by Karen Russell →
The best 20 under 40 story yet, in my opinion. The sublime terror in the final scene is well worth reading the whole story. The author calls it “Hitchcock meets the swamp.”
St. Christopher Working Double Time
A good friend of mine is moving to Detroit to do City Year in a few weeks and, though she has lived in the suburbs her entire life, has never really explored the city and all the beautiful things there. So she asked me to show her my favorites, since I’m a Detroit-loving nerd. We spent the entire day driving around Detroit (Eastern Market, Avalon, Le Petit Zinc, Good Girls Go To Paris, The...
